ST. CATHARINES, ON – Russ Conley has been re-signed to the Niagara River Lions, the team announced today. The centre from Transfer, PA joins the River Lions after finishing his first season in the National Basketball League of Canada.
“I am very excited to be back and I am looking forward to playing another season in front of the best fans in Canada!” said Conley.
“Russ is an experienced player who we believe is ready to make an impact and have the best season of his playing career” said Head Coach Grâce Lokole. “He is a true professional who does whatever is asked of him on and off the court. He is a great teammate and one of the more popular players amongst fans.”
Conley appeared in 31 games for the River Lions during the 2015-16 season, averaging 3.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. Inside the arc, the 6-foot-10 centre shot 60% and made 66% of his shots from the free throw line. A seasoned player, Conley has sharpened his skills through Slovakia’s Basketbal Považká Bystrica and by competing for the Erie BayHawks of the NBA Developmental League.
He played NCAA basketball in his home state of Pennsylvania for Penn State Behrend, where he holds the university’s record for most points with 1,771 and was twice named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Year. During his senior year, Conley led the Lions with 19.4 points per game and averaging 7.9 rebounds.
Throughout the off-season Conley has been highly involved in the Niagara Region. River Lions Public Relations Manager, Michelle Biskup commented, “Off of the court, Russ is the type of player that we want to represent the River Lions. He has been an important part of our presence during the off-season, and is always eager to give back to the community”
The Niagara River Lions have now signed three players for the 2016-17 NBLC season, building the beginnings of a special squad that is seeking to leave a lasting impact for basketball in Niagara.
